A fresh start looks different for everyone

The start of a new year often brings a sense of possibility.

It’s a time when many of us pause, reflect and think about what lies ahead. We make plans. We set intentions. We imagine what this next chapter might hold.

But fresh starts don’t always come with clear roadmaps.

Sometimes, they arrive quietly. Through a decision to begin again. Through the courage to step into something unfamiliar. Through finding connection where none existed before.

At AZCEND, we see many versions of what a fresh start can look like. For some neighbors, it means stability during a time of crisis. For others, it means rediscovering purpose, routine and belonging after a major life transition.

Guy’s story is one of those fresh starts.

Starting over after a lifetime of work

For more than three decades, Guy built a career in cybersecurity while living in Texas. Work defined his days, his routines and much of his identity.

When he retired at 71 and went through a divorce soon after, everything changed.

“I had worked my whole life,” Guy shared. “And suddenly, it was like, what am I going to do now?”

Looking for a new beginning, Guy made a bold choice. He packed what he could fit into his car and moved to Arizona, drawn by the warmer climate and the chance to start over somewhere new.

What he didn’t have was a plan for what came next.

“I didn’t have any expectations,” he said. “I didn’t really know what retirement was supposed to look like for me.”

Finding the Senior Center

As Guy settled into life in Arizona, he began searching online for senior activities. That search led him to the AZCEND Senior Center in Gilbert.

He decided to stop by, unsure of what to expect.

“They were just wonderful,” Guy recalled. “They gave me a tour, introduced me to people and made me feel welcome right away.”

That first visit took place in January of last year. What started as curiosity quickly became routine.

Today, Guy visits the Senior Center almost every day.

More than activities

At the Senior Center, Guy found structure and connection in ways he hadn’t anticipated.

Most days, he shares lunch with the same group of friends. They play Rummikub. They tease each other about baseball rivalries. They attend outings together, from Diamondbacks games to group dinners at local restaurants.

“I’ve made a lot of wonderful friends,” Guy said. “I missed very few days this past year. It’s become a very steady part of my life.”

But what keeps him coming back isn’t just the activities.

“It’s the people,” he shared. “When you walk in, you feel welcomed. You feel recognized.”

A new kind of family

Over time, those shared meals and games grew into something deeper.

“You really do become like a family,” Guy said.

One friendship in particular led to unexpected connection beyond the walls of the Senior Center. Guy began giving a fellow participant a ride home each day. Soon, he was invited to family dinners, holidays and celebrations.

“They’ve kind of adopted me,” he said with a laugh. “And I don’t really have family nearby, so that’s meant a lot.”

For Guy, the Senior Center became more than a place to pass the time. It became a place to belong.

What a fresh start really means

When asked what a “fresh start” means to him now, Guy didn’t hesitate.

“A fresh start means there’s something you’re looking forward to,” he said. “Something you didn’t have yesterday.”

After years defined by work, Guy found a new rhythm. A reason to get up each morning. A community where he feels connected, valued and engaged.

“I never imagined I’d be doing things like this,” he shared. “The lunches, the games, the outings, the friendships. All of it was unexpected.”

Why places like this matter

Guy is quick to point out that the Senior Center’s impact goes far beyond his own experience.

“So many people feel lonely,” he said. “Places like this give people a chance to interact, to keep their minds active, to feel connected.”

AZCEND’s Senior Centers are about more than programming. They are about nourishing minds and bodies. Creating spaces where neighbors can thrive, connect and contribute to their community.

For Guy, that space made all the difference. “I honestly don’t know what I would have done without it,” he said. “It’s been a blessing.”

A fresh start, reimagined

A fresh start doesn’t look the same for everyone. Sometimes it’s about stability during a crisis. Sometimes it’s about healing after loss. And sometimes, it’s about rediscovering connection, purpose and belonging after a lifetime of change.

Guy’s story is one of many unfolding across Chandler, Gilbert and the surrounding communities. Stories made possible because people choose to invest in spaces where neighbors can come together, feel welcomed and thrive.

Programs like the AZCEND Senior Center exist because of community support. Because donors, partners and volunteers believe that no one should feel isolated or alone at any stage of life. Because connection, dignity and hope are essential, not optional.

When you support AZCEND, you help create places where neighbors like Guy find more than activities. They find community. They find routine. They find something to look forward to.

Fresh starts don’t happen alone. They happen when communities show up, together.
