Meet Jenna Cooper, AZCEND’s new Chief Executive Officer

Meet Jenna Cooper and see how AZCEND is building on 60 years of help and hope.

AZCEND is beginning an important new chapter: our Board of Directors has selected Jenna Cooper to serve as the organization’s next chief executive officer. She will begin her new role on Monday, August 3 as AZCEND celebrates 60 years of bringing help and hope to neighbors in need.

“The board approached this search with great care and a deep sense of responsibility to the people AZCEND serves,” said Alejandro Rios, past president of AZCEND’s Board of Directors. “We conducted an intentional, thoughtful nationwide search for a leader who could build on AZCEND’s strong foundation while preparing the organization for the future. Jenna stood out as the right person to guide AZCEND into its next chapter.”

Leading AZCEND into the future

Jenna joins AZCEND at a meaningful time in the organization’s history. As chief executive officer, she will work closely with the staff and Board to keep essential services strong and responsive while preparing for the community’s changing needs.

She will also strengthen relationships with the donors, volunteers, partners and advocates whose generosity and commitment make AZCEND’s work possible.

“I am joining an organization which has a privileged space in community, providing programs and services to neighbors from all walks of life,” Cooper said. “It is an honor to serve our clients and to continue building a network born out of neighborly compassion. Our mission speaks of a brighter future for our clients, and I’m looking forward to learning from them as we walk side by side in nurturing a brighter organization for decades to come.”

Jenna’s collaborative approach reflects the values that have guided AZCEND for six decades. She recognizes the importance of listening, building trust and bringing people together around a shared purpose.

“Jenna brings the experience, compassion and collaborative leadership AZCEND needs for this important moment,” said the Rev. Sarah Oglesby-Dunegan, president of AZCEND’s Board of Directors. “She understands that we must continue providing dependable help today while thoughtfully preparing for the future. I am confident Jenna will lead with integrity, strengthen trust throughout our community and position AZCEND to serve our neighbors for generations to come.”

Help for today, hope for tomorrow

AZCEND serves children, families, older adults and individuals experiencing hunger, poverty and homelessness in Chandler, Gilbert and surrounding East Valley communities.

Food may be the first reason someone comes to AZCEND, but the support often extends far beyond a meal. Through nourishing food, safe shelter, literacy, friendship and personalized guidance, AZCEND helps people overcome barriers and move toward greater stability, self-sufficiency and a brighter future.

AZCEND enters this leadership transition from a position of strength. The organization is stable, supported by committed staff and community partners, and prepared to continue advancing its mission without interruption.

Recognizing Steve Hewitt’s leadership

AZCEND is also deeply grateful to Steve Hewitt for serving as interim CEO during this period of transition. His passion and leadership provided stability and continuity as the Board conducted its nationwide search.

“We extend our sincere thanks to Steve for his steady leadership during this transition,” Rios said. “His guidance and commitment have helped provide continuity and care for AZCEND during this important period.”

Since 1966, AZCEND has brought caring people together to help neighbors overcome difficult circumstances. That spirit of community remains at the heart of the organization’s work and will continue to shape its future.

“AZCEND has a proud history of bringing people together to help neighbors overcome difficult circumstances,” Oglesby-Dunegan said. “With Jenna’s leadership and the continued support of our community, we are ready to build on that legacy and begin shaping AZCEND’s next 60 years.”
